Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Complications You Should Watch Out For

Nowadays, you will observe that women are a lot busier as a result of the growing demand of multitasking and balancing one role from the other. Women can no longer be just a plain housewife but are now ascertaining several roles such as a mother and even a professional in various fields of work. Most often than not, the body is physically and emotionally drained because of these roles. Health starts to become an issue as even daily exercise will now start to be a problem in your hectic schedule. As this lifestyle eliminates healthy living, several types of life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes and heart attack now come into the picture. And the worst case is women can develop an endocrine condition identified as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is also medically termed as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, named after the two medical geniuses who discovered it. Women who suffers from this condition excessively produces and releases androgens or what is commonly known as male hormones. The excessive hormones cause infertility problems and a life-long battle against pregnancy. PCOS however is not just about that. There are more complications you might want to watch out.

Women suffering from PCOS have a higher chance of developing hypertension commonly known as high blood pressure along with other detrimental diseases such as endometrial cancer, diabetes and even other heart diseases.

Those who have PCOS are usually the first to develop endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS do not produce progesterone, which is the hormone responsible for endometrial lining shedding which happens every month during a regular menstrual cycle. Without the shedding of the lining, your endometrium has the tendency to thicken which in the long run can cause endometrial cancer.

One of the many symptoms of PCOS is insulin resistance. As a result, your body needs higher insulin doses before glucose can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Later, this will already cause several changes in your body, including how you respond to glucose. Insulin resistance will later on cause hyperglycemia, a condition in which there is an increased level of glucose in your blood. If not treated immediately, hyperglycemia can cause diabetes.

Heart disease is another issue when you have PCOS. As you already have high insulin levels, you will also develop hypertension, high cholesterol levels in your blood and atherosclerosis which in totality can best be described as a domino effect.

Up to date, PCOS has no known cure but it can still be treated. As soon as you know that you have PCOS, the most therapeutic thing to do is to minimize the symptoms before they even start to occur one by one.
