Abortion - A Not-So-Easy Choice By Aubrey Jem

Abortion has always been a sensitive issue. Conservatives curse it while the more open-minded sectors support it. It is as scandalous as the view on homosexuality, religion, and the government. But when we think of it, it all boils down to choice.

Choice is a basic human right. If a woman decides to undergo abortion, shouldn't the people around her respect her decision? Surely, she didn't just wake up one morning and thought, "Hell, I'll abort this kid." No. we can never know what psychological dilemmas run in a woman's mind in the process of planning to the actual abortion of her baby. I mean, no matter what, it's still a part of her.

As we all know, there are factors that lead a woman to resort to abortion. Economy, family, society, the list goes on. We can't blame a mother who believes she is doing her child a favor by letting it escape the poverty of not eating three square meals a day, of sleeping like sardines packed in the four corners of your little room, of missing school and staying illiterate. We can't blame her if she believes that her child will only curse her with the kind of life she has to offer the child.

There are several other reasons. Reasons we will never know and, sometimes, understand. A woman is an ocean of emotions and reasons. Most of the time, she keeps it to herself in fear of criticism. The whines we hear, mostly on the Internet, are just the crust to their core-deep insecurities. And why would she bother to explain herself? The society only listens to what it wants to hear anyway. The sadder thing is the woman who chooses to "kill" her child is ostracized in the more conservative countries.

Because abortion is frowned upon in the said countries, the women who need it are forced to consult underground clinics where the equipment are not always the right ones sanitary as they're supposed to be. Knowing that this could be dangerous, they still go on in fear on criticism from the society they are in.

Of course, these scenarios farfetched to the countries that legalize abortion, but, believe it or not, they happen. It is not wise for us to judge because we are not in their shoes. This reminds me of a poem I've read somewhere. And this line struck me the most:

Have you felt of the tears and the fears that person has fought? If not, don't criticize, judge, or condemn-unless you have walked in his shoes.

Well, in this case, unless you have walked in her shoes. I am not advocating for abortion, but neither am I against it. As emphasized earlier, choice is a major factor in this issue. And we can't argue with an individual's choice, unless that choice is imposed on her. In that case, that's a totally arguable matter. That's already depriving her a basic human right. We are aware of the pains (sometimes, trauma) a woman endures in the process of abortion. Imagine that double or triple when the act is commanded out of her own will. Yes, abortion is a choice, but one that is not easily thought of or done.

Once a month your body generates extra tissue to create a thicker uterine lining. If you release an egg that then gets fertilized, this lining is where the egg (or ovum) parks itself and starts the process of cell division that leads to a fetus and - so long as nothing interferes with the process - eventually a child, about ten months later.

Yes, that read ten months, not nine. Although nine months is the length most people use to refer to pregnancy, in fact the process that begins at fertilization usually lasts ten months for most women.

Bleeding and Cramping During Your Menstrual Cycle are Caused by Prostaglandins

What are prostaglandins? They are chemical compounds released during menstruation when the extra lining of your uterine wall realizes it won't be needed this month and decides to leave.

Anthropomorphism notwithstanding, menstruation is the result of your body receiving indications that no fertilized egg has been implanted this month. Healthy growth of the ovum requires a fresh uterine lining, so each month that you do not get pregnant, your body starts over.

OK, now we're to the part about prostaglandins. At the stage in the menstrual cycle when the uterine lining begins to break down, the lining itself produces molecular compounds that speed the process of clearing out the uterus along so that a fresh lining can start forming.

Fertility at Age 40+

The age old saying 'It was the best of times and it was the worst of times', might certainly apply to the subject of fertility rates for women age 40 and above. Getting pregnant at 40+ can be the best of times but the process involved could be the worst of times. You don't need to panic, but if you put off trying to get pregnant any longer, your chances for a natural pregnancy can be less than 5%.

Obviously, the younger a woman is, the greater the odds of being fertile and becoming pregnant. As your age creeps upwards, your fertility chances become less each year with a serious decline in the mid 40's.

According to studies conducted on fertility rates by age brackets, the optimum chance for pregnancy occurs between the ages of 20-29 with fertility rates averaging 87% and 78% respectively. Although there is a drop off in fertility rates (down to 63% and 53%) for those in their 30's, there is still a very good chance of pregnancy. Once a woman reaches age 40, the chances for fertility drop significantly to just 33% and down to a mere 5% at age 45 and above.

Does this mean the 40+ woman cannot be fertile? The primary reason that fertility rates drop off has nothing to do with whether a woman is physically capable of becoming pregnant, it is simply that women age 40 and above do not produce enough eggs to increase the likelihood of those few eggs actually becoming fertilized. As such, many 40+ aged women become pregnant via in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Aside from in-vitro, what can you do to naturally increase your odds of fertility as you age and reach 40 and beyond?

Many physicians will advise you to follow some careful steps to not only help with the low production of healthy eggs but also have a normal, healthy, and safe pregnancy and delivery when you actually do get pregnant. Women over 40 must be very conscious of their diet and exercise. The healthier the body the better chance you have of keeping your reproductive cycle healthy and also having a healthy and non-complicated pregnancy.

When in your 40's and ready to have a baby by natural means with your husband/partner, you'll want to have unprotected sex at least 3 times a week for at least 4-6 months. If after this activity, you have not become pregnant, you may want to seek out your doctor and/or a fertility specialist.
Your doctor or fertility specialist will check to make sure there are no issues with your reproductive organs and other important considerations with an impending pregnancy. They most likely will test to see if there may be any problems with how your ovaries are functioning or making sure there are no problems with your fallopian tubes. You may also have to have your husband/partner's sperm tested.

Occasionally, an ultrasound test is used instead for diagnosis, when there is a concern about radiation exposure.

Having a kidney stone is a warning sign that your kidneys are weakening, or not functioning as they should. Eating less protein (specifically, red meat), drinking enough water, and getting moderate daily exercise are the main changes men need to make to help their kidneys function as they should.

It turns out that the healthy kidney diet and lifestyle is also a healthy choice if you are living with other conditions, such as diabetes type 2, or if you need to lose weight (and, specifically, dangerous belly fat).

I can't even put on my child's shoes", Or "I'm a terrible Mother. I cant do anything right."

All of these thoughts are distorted, impacted by specific tricks our minds play on us sometimes. For instance, having pain does not make a human (any human) useless. Having pain does not make a mother bad. And what child is better off without their mother?

A man in a similar situation may have thoughts that are impacting his perception of himself as a man. Cognitive distortions don't have to make sense. They just have to be repeated enough and we willingly believe them. They are frequently responsible for a person's mood plummeting into anxiety and depression. If you are listening to these awful thoughts about yourself all day how could they not affect your mood?
