Getting The Skinny On Cellulite And How To Lose It

So what exactly is cellulite? Simply put, it is pockets of fat trapped within the outermost layer of skin that can cause an unattractive dimpling effect. It occurs most commonly in the thighs, buttocks and abdomen but can also occur in other areas. When considering how to lose cellulite it is important to remember that it actually has no connection to being overweight, as it can occur in women of any size.

What does cause cellulite is hormonal imbalance. Hormones, primarily estrogen, which occur naturally in women help to control blood flow, lymphatic drainage, fat accumulation and the condition of connective tissue, all of which are factors in the development of cellulite. Because hormone levels fluctuate as we get older, cellulite and age are commonly linked.

When fat pockets build up in the outer layer of skin, the connective tissue between them can become weakened, causing them to pull at the skins' surface, producing a dimpled or "orange skin" effect. While it is not harmful, this condition is embarrassing and women have been trying for years to come up with ways to successfully figure out how to lose cellulite.

The key factor to take into consideration is that because cellulite is not directly linked with excess weight, eating right and exercising to lose weight, while helpful, cannot solve the problem alone. Of course, the less fat you are carrying the better off you'll be in terms of overall health. But to successfully battle cellulite, you need to look at the connection between cellulite and aging.

Many techniques have been employed over the years in answer to the question of how to lose cellulite. Everything from liposuction to herbal creams has been used, to varying degrees of success. In order to get rid of cellulite, you need to break up the excess stored fat in the outer layers of skin to allow for proper draining of the liquid surrounding them. This will, in turn, ease the tension on the surface of the skin and lessen the cellulite effect.

There are some creams that, when applied to the skin, can produce a smoothing effect. Herbal supplements help regulate hormone levels and deep massage can naturally break down fat stores in the outer layers, lessening the appearance of cellulite. Liposuction, while a popular choice, is only mildly effective as it focuses on the inner layers of fat. So you can see that, while cellulite and aging go hand in hand, cellulite prevention is not as simple.

You can't easily avoid cellulite but living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining the proper balance of hormones can go a long way toward lessening its effects. Don't wait until cellulite has taken hold of you, stay one step ahead of the game by maintaining your overall health and keeping a careful eye on your hormone levels at every stage of your life.
